It’s 2024 already, and we seem to have hit the ground running!
Christmas is always a busy time of year, and the festive season got off to a flying start with our annual Christmas party. Not only did we all enjoy a delicious meal, there was unusual entertainment by Bellydance Flow of Bollington. Fortified with a little Christmas spirit, most of us got up to have a go and learnt some basic moves. It was surprisingly good fun and helps coordination and balance as well as burning off a few post-dinner calories. Hot on the heels of the party was a festive wreath-making workshop under the expert tuition of Dorothy Monks. Participants turned out some really eye-catching creations complete with evergreens and decorations of preserved oranges and cinnamon sticks. December was a time of double celebration as it’s also our birthday month – we were founded in 1945 so we’re now 78. The Women’s Institute was originally founded to help revitalise rural communities, and in these days of working from home and social isolation we think it’s as relevant as ever. Our first meeting of 2024 was a talk by Paul Jenkinson who runs the official Morecambe and Wise website www.morecambeandwise.com. It was lovely to see some of the old video clips of classic comedy moments and find out more about Britain’s best-loved entertainment duo. We’ve lots in store for the coming months, as well, with ‘have a go’ Pilates and a talk on the WI in war time. We meet at 7.30pm on the fourth Wednesday of the month at Lower Withington Village Hall. If you would like to consider becoming a member we’d love you to come along. You can join us as a guest at two meetings before making a decision on whether or not to join. There is more information on our website, www.LowerWithingtonWI.com or contact our new members secretary, at [email protected]. We look forward to meeting you.
