Great Big Green Week Volunteers - thank you! You are invited to volunteer at The Lovell Quinta Arboretum (LQA) (Swettenham village, CW12 2LF, behind the Swettenham Arms) on Saturday 1 October, 10am to 4pm The LQA is run by a charitable trust and relies on donations and volunteer labour for its improvement and maintenance. It contains over 2,500 trees and shrubs of which many are rare and unusual, and is home to three National Collections – oak, pine and elm. It is a member of several plant conservation organisations and provides a rich and varied habitat for wildlife. WI members are invited to volunteer for a few hours to help maintain this beautiful place, which is scientifically and educationally important as well as an asset to the local community. Originally started by Sir Bernard Lovell, the LQA covers 28 acres and encompasses wide, grassy avenues, groves and specimen trees. Tasks will include clearing away of dead branches, weeding, cleaning of collection labels and some cutting back of undergrowth (some parts of the LQA are deliberately left wild for wildlife to flourish, others have to be cleared for the health of the trees!) Please park at the Swettenham Arms carpark. We have only a composting toilet onsite but we have an arrangement to use the loos at the pub if that doesn’t appeal! The entrance to the Arboretum is at the back of the beer garden on the left hand side of the pub (there’s no need to pay the entrance fee in this case!). Please bring sturdy boots and gardening gloves, also trowels and secateurs if you have them. You’ll also need to bring food and drink for the day. Large gardening equipment such as wheelbarrows will be provided. There is no need to commit to the whole day, if you can come down for a couple of hours we’d love to see you for a sociable day out and would very much appreciate the help.
